Gender difference would play a role here, from a female perspective the text says a lot about insecurities. However from a male perspective, the detailed description of the female form comes off as a little bit erotic. Also, the differences in coming of age between men and women, because when a woman is on the edge of adolescence it is almost taboo to talk about it, but when a man is in that stage of life it is openly discussed.

She is looking at what is typically culturally accepted of a womanly shape and she is not fitting into the societal status quo.

The fact that the author of this text is a female makes us accepting of it, if the text were written from a male perspective it would appear to us very differently. Woman are more open and almost encouraged to criticize their bodies, whereas men are encouraged to brag about their bodies
